No More Pool Shirts

I went to a water slide park the last few days, and I just wore my bathing suit. No pool shirt or whatever they are called.

Embracing the dad body

In the past, I have worn those things to the pool, beach, water park, etc. And let’s be real, they’re not fooling anybody.

Dudes with six packs don’t rock the swim shirt.

So, the hell with it. I am working on getting in better shape, but that really means to me that I’ll have a better dad body.

The six pack thing isn’t happening, and I am OK with that.

So, no more clingy, obvious, wet shirt. That’s a clown move anyway. Plus, you never move past the farmer’s tan.

Still Stuck with Flatline Weight Loss

I usually do my weekly weigh in on Saturdays, but I am going to be on Spring Break, so weigh in is Friday this week.

Anyhow, for the second week in a row, I am at the same weight.

I spent half of the past week in San Francisco at a conference, and while I was pretty good on the food, my hotel had Pliny the Elder on tap, and I had a bunch of it, since I really enjoyed it and was not sure when I’d have a chance to have it again.

But I did exercise daily with a combination lots of walking around San Francisco, including those monster hills, running, and hiking.

Yesterday, I had a nice plate of BBQ, so maybe that salty goodness got me bloated up a bit. I’ll tell myself that in my head, at least.

Untie Your Shoes Before You Take Them Off

I am towards the end of the life of a pair of my Brooks Adrenaline shoes, and I don’t take care of them the way I did when they were new.

Usually, after a run or walk, I’ll push off each shoe with my other foot, instead of untying the laces and taking them off properly.

Over time, the pressure from pushing on the heel to slide them off has resulted in the back of the right shoe pushing into my foot a bit.

The other day, as I was running, it was pretty uncomfortable, because of this, but I kept going, because I didn’t want to give up over some pain.

When I took off my right shoe, my sock was all wet. I figured it was sweat, but nope. After I took off the sock, my foot was bloody and the sock was trashed.

The cleaning lady for my hotel room might have been curious about the crime scene sock in the trash, but I tipped well and she didn’t escalate things.

One Bad Day Blows the Week

So much for the whole cheat day thing – I was disciplined for 6 days, and then one day of some drinking and bad food messed it all up.

I went on a one day work trip and planned to eat and drink well, but that pretty much broke apart shortly after arriving.

You see, I went to Philadelphia and was hungry at lunch, so I went with a cheesesteak. I made an attempt at being responsible by having it as a wrap (wheat even), instead of a roll. But then a side order of fries, too.

Things were going well after that – there were so many Philly themed treats that I love at this event, such as soft pretzels, and Tastykakes. I stayed away.

I love Philly pretzels – do not eat. Do not eat!

After they wrapped up, there was a keg of Yuengling, and I had a cup. Then a happy hour and some calorie rich IPAs, followed by a late IHOP dinner.

The next day I was back to doing things right, but overall I stayed the same weight as the previous week. While that’s not the worst thing, it was a step back, because I was two pounds lighter before the trip.

Next week, I am in San Francisco. That should be a tricky food challenge. I’ll start it off by bringing a bunch of Atkin’s breakfast bars and some nuts to snack on.

I Got Some PowerBlock Dumbbells

I wanted to get into using weights to get some tone and strength in my arms, but didn’t want to deal with tons of equipment.

That didn’t seem like a possibility until I came across PowerBlock dumbbells, which are very compact dumbbells that enable you to easily select a weight you want to lift and the rest of the weight in your dumbbell is left on the rack.

They call it a “selectorized dumbbell”, and they make them for home and commercial use.

They’ve been around since the 90’s, but I don’t follow this stuff, so they’re new to me.

You can change the weight amounts quickly in ten pound increments. I got the Classic 50 PowerBlock, where each block can range from 10 to 50 pounds.

They feel very durable, and I’ve messed around with them, but now I need to find some sort of regular workout to do with them.

Back in the Saddle with a Loss of 3 Pounds

I had a couple weeks of gains, and then I got my act together this past week, and trimmed off three pounds since the last weigh in for a cumulative loss of 14 pounds so far.

The last seven days were a combination of lots of meat (sometimes too much meat) and vegetables, as well as steady exercise.

While I was happy about the loss of weight, I hated seeing my Maryland Terps lose to Kansas in the Sweet 16. I did have a tasty cheat that night, and it was totally worth it.

After all, I am trying to work out a lifestyle here, and that will include indulging every once in a while.

Last year, I did the Rugged Maniac (that’s what the picture is from at the top), and I just signed up to do it again this coming July.

It’s sort of a kinder, gentler version of a Tough Mudder (which I also did last year). It’s a 5k with around 20 obstacles.

I need to search around for some other races to participate in. I’d like to have at least one a month, whether it be a fun run, 10k, or whatever.

Couch to 5k to Become a Runner Again

I enjoy running outside. Well, I really enjoy the moment of finishing the run, and the feeling of accomplishment. But, I guess, that counts as enjoying running.

In the past, I was running regularly, but during the time that I packed on weight, I was hardly running.

Now that I am getting back into it, I’ve found it a lot more challenging than it used to be – not just the extra weight, but my stamina was killed.

So, I decided to start from scratch to rebuild my running by installing the Couch to 5k app. The app takes anybody on a nine week training course to take you from the couch to a 5k.

It requires about 20 to 30 minutes, three times a week, to complete the training and be ready for your first 5k (3.1 miles) race.

Currently, I am on week seven. I prefer running outdoors, but recent cold weather has pushed me onto the treadmill.

That time goes a lot slower, so I am excited to see the cold days fading.

I’d highly recommend this app – when I started, I was struggling after a couple minutes, and my last run with it was for 22 minutes. The app provides encouragement and gives audio cues along the way.

I am looking forward to getting to a place where I am smiling during the races, like I am in the picture above. Notice how I’m having fun and the other people in the picture look miserable. I am almost back to smile running.

All that said, now I have to pick a 5k and sign up.

No Good Way to Spin My Gain of a Kilo

I figured it would be a challenge to keep my weight in check during the South by Southwest conference, and I was right, unfortunately.

After the first couple days of the event, I’d gained a pound for my weigh in last week, and then another two pounds today. Or as I prefer to characterize it, one more kilogram (roughly 2.2 pounds).

While I was exercising regularly with runs and a hike, there were a bunch of beers, including one with a big scoop of ice cream.

A bunch of us went out on a boat… then beers after.

The SXSW exhibit hall had some business opportunities in between booths handing out beers.

Also, I went to see The Brothers Grimsby at an Alamo Drafthouse, and scarfed down a big pretzel and a couple beers.

On St. Patrick’s Day, I had more beers and some bad restaurant corned beef and cabbage.

Well hell, I am sort of surprised it was only two pounds.

A couple weeks of badness. Time to drink water, instead of beers, and skip the junk for a while.

I Prefer Cardio for My Exercise

I love to get outside for a run, hike, walk, or bike ride. When it’s nasty out, I’ll use a treadmill at home, or go to the gym, but it’s just not the same.

Plus, when you’re outside, you’ve got the sunshine, fresh air, and beautiful scenery, unless you live in a drab spot.

It’s not well rounded, and I know that, so I’ve been trying to incorporate some strength into the mix.

I came across a quick exercise routine to do before the shower, and I’ve been mixing it in lately.

  • 50 jumping jacks
  • 20 crunches
  • 20 mountain climbers
  • 30 second plank

I will work in some weights and other exercises, too, because the 5 minutes is obviously not enough each day.

I Went in the Wrong Direction This Week

Weight loss inevitably has it’s peaks and valleys, yet I was really hoping that I’d have many weeks of valleys before I hit any peaks.

But I managed to add a pound this week, and I can’t say it’s entirely surprising, because I’m at the South by Southwest conference and eating many meals out.

They have been healthy, for the most part, but still with sauces and dressings with unknown calories and carbs, there could always be some traps.

And then there are the occasional french fries or cocktails, though both have been in moderation.

Plus, I have been getting in exercise on a steady basis.

Cold, wet, and windy, but not a rest day.

I have not been drinking much water each day, so I’ll be more focused on that and my food choices over the next week.
